A waking watch is a system whereby trained fire marshals continually patrol the interior and exterior of a building in order to detect a fire, raise the alarm and evacuate. It should be recognised as a responsive solution to fire management requirements: 24-hour surveillance of multiple-occupancy buildings. Trained fire safety officers monitor and patrol, searching for signs of fire and fire hazards. Patrols are conducted at regular intervals throughout a 24-hour period, with real-time reports generated at the time of patrol.

On arrival, NCS fire officers place NFC tag points in key areas for marshals to scan on their patrols. Clients receive real-time feedback and reports, showing that hazard points are routinely patrolled.

In the event of a fire alarm, fire marshals alert the emergency services, locate the cause of the alarm, alert everybody to the emergency and, if required, evacuate the building in accordance with its fire evacuation plan. Marshals are kitted with durable fire safety equipment.
